Gillette

Late 1940s Post-War Classic (c. 1948–1950)
The Gillette Aristocrat with one smooth band and one knurled band represents the next evolution of Gillette’s flagship luxury razor in the years immediately following World War II. Built during the late 1940s, this model reflects Gillette’s refinement of both form and function—pairing elegant styling with practical improvements for everyday shaving.
This Aristocrat was produced after World War II, generally dated to approximately 1948–1950. It is not pre-WWI. Instead, it belongs to the era when American manufacturing shifted from wartime output back to consumer luxury goods, resulting in exceptional build quality and thoughtful design updates.
Unlike the earlier double smooth band version, this Aristocrat features:
One smooth decorative band, preserving the clean, upscale look of the Aristocrat line
One knurled band, added to enhance grip and control, especially with wet or soapy hands
This combination strikes a balance between elegance and usability, making it a favorite among daily shavers while still maintaining strong collector appeal.
Many examples from this period also feature a notched center bar, allowing for easier blade loading directly from a dispenser—an innovation introduced in the late 1940s. The reliable Twist-to-Open (TTO) mechanism opens the doors smoothly and locks the blade securely in place.
The shaving character of this Aristocrat is often described as slightly milder and smoother than earlier post-war models, while still being more substantial and efficient than standard Super Speeds. It delivers a comfortable, controlled shave that suits a wide range of beard types and experience levels.
